A Home...
Situated 15km north of Antananarivo, Akany Avoko is a children's Home caring for over 120 impoverished children and young people between 0 and 21 years of age. They help orphans, abandoned babies, street kids, children from broken families, young people with disabilities, and teenage girls on remand for petty crimes. At Akany Avoko it is their aim to provide a safe and supportive environment where disadvantaged young people can fulfill their ful potential in a safe, supportive and happy environment.
The door has always been open and now, more than 40 years on, they offer shelter, care and the opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge to all of those in need.
Their aim is for self-sufficiency. They use alternative technologies and are discovering sustainable ways to beat the poverty that is threatening to destroy their unique environment and culture.
The centre no longer receives any state funding and relies on the genrosity of others. If you 'Google' Akan Avoko you will come across a wide range of others who have recognised this somewhat isolated island place need.
