Akany Avoko   (pron: A-ka-nee A-voo-koo) "The home of the Avoko flower"

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the home started by two Swiss missionaries.

An earlier visit to Madagascar gave Wyn and Gil the opportunity to see first hand the work done at Akany Avoko. Impressed, they planned to offer some time as volunteers to help with the work being done to ensure that the children in Akany’s care have the best  chance of productive and independent lives. These children come in great need and are offered love, hope, nurture, education and training.

Akany Avoko’s immensely good work is supplemented by a steady progression of international volunteers, directed and helped by two long term volunteers, Rebecca and Ony.

Currently the volunteers, mostly young, are from Switzerland, Holland, England, Canada and New Zealand.

Gil Barbezat

Gil is a semi-retired academic physician who has an interest in teaching and health care. His time at Akany will be valuable in advising on health matters and helping the children improve their conversational French and develop their English skills. He also plans to learn more about the conservation initiatives in place at Akany Avoko. He is also well aware of the need the children have to have someone to play games with and get special attention.

Wyn Barbezat

Wyn comes to Akany Avoko with a special interest in working with the pre-schoolers and teaching English to the older girls. There is a strong desire in Madagascar to learn English as it is now the third official language after Malagasy and French.

Both Gil and Wyn are elders within the Highgte Presbyterian Church (PCANZ) Dunedin.
